Oldsmobile 442 1969 Description
1969 HURST OLDS
I am selling my 1969 Hurst Olds.
First Off, This is the REAL DEAL 1969 Hurst Olds # 466 of the 900+ made in 1969
In fact it is one of the more rare Factory A/C cars produced. Aprox. 1/3 were A/C equipped.
I have copies of the shipping documents that show my car was delivered to HURST on May 7, 1969. I also have a copy of the shipping document dated May 9,1969 when the car was delivered to John Brown Olds INC. in Gretna, Louisiana.
Now the story of My H/O. I purchased it here on eBay on July 4, 2003. It was located in Baton Rouge, LA. After problems with the shipper I rec’d the car at the end of August 2003.
When I bought i, the original Engine, transmission, wheels, and rear end were long gone. ( so if you are looking for an all original numbers matching H/O this is not the car for you)
I have spent the last 14 years creating what you see here today.
When I Bought it, it had a fully built 1976 455 with “C†Heads, a radical cam shaft, headers, 3†Exhaust, and 4.11:1 rear end gear. It was very fast (to say the least) but drove terribly. The Cam was so radical that the power brake booster never received enough vacuum to stop the car. The Turbo 400 was built to where it would not shift without chirping the tires. The rear end gear ratio made it very un-pleasant to drive on the Freeway. The Exhaust was so loud that it vibrated my whole house when running and set off car alarms parked on the street.
My plans for the car were to bring it back to a stock appearing and performing 1969 Hurst Olds like the one I owned in College.
So over the last 14 years I have done the following.
MECHANICS
Re-did motor with a milder camshaft,( has great vacuum, but still has an awesome idle.) Installed a Cast iron intake manifold with a brand new Rochester Quadra jet. Brand new Stock exhaust manifolds with new dual exhaust system including correct exhaust tips. Installed a new 1970 style OAI system. Installed new Chrome valve covers. Installed a newly rebuilt turbo 400 transmission including torque converter.
Front suspension rebuilt with new ball joints, tie rod ends, center link etc. Even installed a rebuilt steering box.
When I replaced the rear end I found and installed a BOP 12 bolt with 2.46:1 gear ratio open rear end. At the time I was willing to give up performance for the ease of highway cruising.
HOWEVER, after 13 years of getting laughed at for only spinning one tire, and loosing races to V6 Honda’s, Last year I spent $2K for a brand new 3.90:1 ring and pinion and Posi unit. All I can say is that it now drives like a different car .
INTERIOR
Over the years I have installed new front seat covers, the back seat is original and in good shape. New Carpet, package tray, and new headliner. Interior is now very nice.
WHEELS AND TIRES
I modified a set of later model Hurst / Olds wheels to resemble the original H/O wheels. I think they came out great! The tires are 245-60 15†and are in Xlint shape
BODY
When I received the car the only rust was a small area on the passenger side floorboard under the rear seat. When I replaced the carpet I just riveted a piece of metal over the area(I do not weld). The area has not gotten any larger over the years(see pic)
In 2008 I took the car to the Hurst Olds Club of America’s National Meet in Flagstaff Arizona. Had a great time, drove the car on all the cruises etc, except I was very embarrassed at the obvious wrong shade of gold on my car’s stripes and the dings and dents it wore compared to the other 69 H/O’s there.
So in 2009, I had the H/O repainted the correct colors and stripe patterns, including having the black pin stripping hand painted. It came out great and has held up remarkably well over the last 8 years. Has one small chip on front left fender(see pic)
The mirrors are similar to original but are not.
BUMPERS
Chrome on bumpers is nice. Rear bumper has a slight bend on bottom(see pic)
GLASS.
Glass is all good. Windshield has small chip. (happened on trip to Flagstaff) Rear glass has a couple very small scratches.
My intentions were to NEVER sell this car, but to pass it on to my sons. However, I recently found and purchased another 1969 Hurst Olds with the original drivetrain, wheels, ..etc. and have decided to make it my “keeperâ€
Although I have loved and enjoyed this car for years the way it is
The following is a list of items that need to be addressed:
Wipers don’t work
Heater and AC in-op, have most of AC components.
Gauges worked years ago, then all stopped. After no luck remedying the issue I installed an auxiliary gas gauge under dash
Stock radio in-op CD player installed under dash butt speakers are terrible
Speedo reads incorrectly after rear end upgrade
Driver side rear quarter window regulator inop .
Shifter cable was replaced but was never able to adjust it correctly . I think it is the incorrect cable for the dualgate but have used it as is for years.
No glove box behind glove box door.
Car has a clean clear California title in my name and is currently registered and insured. Calif personalized plate†HRST OLZ†goes with car.
My son did a story on my car on the website Speedhunters.com in 2013
