THE FASCINATING STUDEBAKER SCOTSMAN STORY. the fabled Studebaker-Packard corporation was in rather dire straights as the 1950s drew to a close. They had no money for extensive tooling changes. and this is the time (1957/58) when the iconic Packard brand suffered the indignity of losing its own exclusive body and was forced to share with Studebaker. But Studebaker had a clever idea. Why not offer the lowest-priced domestic 2 and 4-doors sedans with a "bare bones" approach to features and name this series based on frugality "the Scotsman"?At a base price of just $1776 for the initial (1957) 2-door model. Studebaker successfully under-priced all economy offerings from Ford. GM. and Chrysler. Only 4. 00 of the Scotsman series cars were expected to be sold. but in fact. over 9. 00 rolled out of the plant. Many were sold to penny-pinching customers. of course. but the wealthy also took note of the car's attributes and no less a notable than Eleanor Roosevelt drove one! Up to 30-miles per gallon were claimed by the manufacturer. Contemporary articles (included with the binder of original documents shown at right) cited owners reporting even higher gas mileage on some long trips. The Scotsman had no frills: only ONE sun-visor. a "blanking plate" where the radio would have gone. NO "button" switches on the body pillars for the Dome Light. because there is NO Dome Light. etc! Finally. it should be noted that the Studebaker Scotsman economy concept proved so popular. that the Scotsman series of 1958 Studebakers outsold the Champion. Commander. and President series models - COMBINED!OPERATIONAL REPORT. most importantly. we cannot stress enough how smoothly and nicely this car drives! That is probably the best argument for our belief that the indicated mileage is original. It just does not drive or ride like the typical 57-year old "worn out" car. The only item noted that was not operational was the horn. New-style electric wipers have been installed. and the side and back window have been modestly tinted - a real "plus" on warm days. INVESTMENT POTENTIAL. is excellent! The Studebaker-Packard story is ever-fascinating. interest in "spartan" models such as the Scotsman is in vogue. and there is important history embedded in this car as one of Detroit's earliest economy offerings. ODOMETER REMARKS. the very high originality. smooth running operation. and overall physical condition all support the indicated 16. 80 mileage as likely original. However. it is impossible to be 100% certain of mileage on vintage odometers having only 5-digits. Therefore. no guarantees of accuracy are provided and true mileage is not verifiable with certainty. PLEASE BE REALISTIC. this is a rare example of a car that has been gently used and cared for for over 50 years. It is not really so much a "restored" car. as it is a "maintained" car. It is not perfect. it is not a 100-point show car. The repaint done some years ago was obviously done more from a standpoint of cosmetic improvement/maintenance than for show. The paint finish is quite respectable in most areas. but has age patina and exhibits some application flaws common with economy painting. For all city-driving testing prior to listing. the car was impressively smooth and did not drive/ride like most 50+ year-old cars. However (as explained in the image strip at right) despite having new tires. speeds above 60 mph or so exhibit vibration that we suspect is from wheel rims that may not be true. The engine is amazingly smooth. and its calm idling reminded me of a vintage sewing machine! LOCATION. the car is located in Buford. GA. about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta. highway.
