Plymouth Road Runner 1971 Description
Up for sale is this beautiful 1971 Plymouth Road Runner Coupe. It is finished in it's original color combination of Dark Bronze Metallic over Black Vinyl. It has 5,875 miles since it's comprehensive restoration was completed. Roughly 96,000 miles on the car before the restoration and it is believed to be a 2-owner car.
In 1971, the coupe bodywork was completely changed to a more rounded fuselage design in keeping with then-current Chrysler styling trends, including a steeply raked windshield, hidden cowl, and deeply inset grille and headlights. In a departure from previous thinking, the B-Body two-door bodies shared little if any sheet metal, glass, or trim with the four-door bodies.
This example was sold new in Leland, NC. I am selling this for a friend and he bought it in South Carolina in 1993 needing a complete restoration. He proceeded to restore the car with his 3 sons teaching them the art of auto restoration from 1994 until it's completion in 2000. The car was correctly done with some minor improvements from stock.
The restoration is well documented in a photo album and they started by completely disassembling it and stripping the paint. It did have some rust repair needs in the cowlwith the onlybody panel needing replacement being thedriver's side rear quarter panel. The engine, transmission, and rear-end are all original to the car. The 383 was originally rated at 300hp but during the restoration, minor performance modifications were done such as decking andboring it .030 over making it a 388ci, a purple cam was installed withto-spec lifters, springs, and retainers, and it retains the stock rod's and crank. An aluminum intake manifold and Carter 4-barrel carb sit above the intake. Headman headers help it breath and flow through a 2.5" Flowmaster dual exhaust.
The dash is original but the gauges were refinished and the odometer was reset to 0 during the restoration. It is equipped with power steering, manual drum brakes with front discs, rallye wheels, and a black vinyl bench seat. The car was completed in 2000 and made it's debut at the 2000 Mopar Nationals and has since covered 5,875 miles in the last 17 years having only been sparingly enjoyed in the summer at car events. Otherwise, it remained covered in a climate controlled garage. Being a 17 year old restoration, it still showsvery well, however, it is starting to show it's age in a handful of areas. Signs of rust developing in the passenger side rear quarter panel are starting, however, it's very minor and in the very early stages of development but wanted to disclose it as it's hard to see in the pictures. Other than that, it is in outstanding condition and looks amazing in the sun.
