Plymouth Other 1959 Description
With tail fins in their very pinnacle for 1959, Plymouth was right in the thick of things with a fine array of cars featuring a tail fin that could make an F-16 blush with envy. These were cars that reached for the stars with aerodynamic styling that spoke directly to the emerging jet age. Flashy names like Savoy, Belvedere, and the Fury were the order of the day, but the absolute top of Plymouth’s line was the Sport Fury convertible. Selling for $3,125, only Plymouth’s nine-passenger Sport Suburban sold for more and even that was just six dollars. What one got for the money was a convertible that was glamorous, sleek, sexy, and looked like an absolute dream cruising down the boulevard. The Sport Fury in 1959 was offered in onlya two door hardtop and a convertible. Out of the 22,000 total Sport Fury production in 1959, only 5,000 convertibles were produced and there are much fewer surviving today. 1959 was the only year Plymouth produced a Sport Fury convertible.Offered here is an excellent example of this rarecar from 1959 finished in Plymouth’s Flame Red. This Sport Fury is fully restored and features all of the fine attributes that this great car from the 1950s was known for. As Plymouth’s top-of-the line car, it differed from the rest of the line with a trim spear that curved upwards to match the fin at the rear quarter and was finished with a silver anodized trim panel compete with the Fury script. Virgil Exner’s “Forward Look” design medallion also graced the rear quarter panel and a stylish sport deck lid tire cover stamping carried a look of pure elegance. All chrome is in excellent condition on this Sport Fury and it also rides on wide white wall tires. The interior is a study of the jet age with a sleek steering wheel design and gauges that travel in all directions. Power for this Sport Fury comes from a 318 cubic-inch V-8 rated at 260 horsepower. The overall appearance and drivability of this nicely restored car makes it perfect for touring of any distance.
In the present day there are very few of these left, which makes for an unusual and rare car. For cruising the boulevard or display at the Friday night car show, this Sport Fury convertible is a car that’s sure to be a hit wherever it goes.
