Plymouth Special Deluxe 1947 Description

This lovely 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe four door sedan is a stylish, reliable, and practical car, both when it was new and today. With a restoration that offers a few updates but doesn't erase the quality and fun-to-drive quotient, it's an affordable and enjoyable way to get an early post WWII classic. These cars are a great piece of American history. Very similar to the pre-war Plymouths, these cars were about getting vehicles into the hands on an eager nation that was ready to once again celebrate the open road. This one symbolizes that cheery optimism with a great new shade of metallic green. So while this isn't exactly a factory color, it's meant to be a gleaming example of the vehicle that recaptured the American dream. Since the paint is so new and shimmering, the brightwork had to be brought up to the same level. Besides the wraparound chrome bumpers, there are plenty of great stylist's touches. You see it in elements like full-length trim that even incorporates the door handles. And up front the tri-bar grille incorporates the parking lights as well as the fender/headlight trim. The restored tan interior does a fantastic job of giving this spacious sedan a comfortable and complete feeling without upgrading past Plymouth's everyman theme. New seats covers, door panels, headliner, and carpeting make this a fantastic place to spend some time. But with pieces like the original garnish moldings and door hardware, this atmosphere always feels like it's the '40s. The flashy woodgrained dash is full of crisply marked instruments and art deco chrome trim. It's a true time warp of an experience as you sit behind the tan and chrome wheel, grabbing the three-on-the-tree shifter, and gazing at the ultra-wide speedometer.Under the hood looks refreshingly original with only the right upgrades. For example, you get the correct 217 cubic-inch inline-six block, but now it has been upgraded to 12-volt power and an alternator for far better reliability and serviceability. Overall, the engine bay is tidy and quite authentic, even showing original components like the oil bath air cleaner. It's also surprisingly thrifty, and Plymouth advertisements of the day suggested that it was among the most economical new cars to operate. But the true to key to happiness on this sedan is the control it offers. It's in everything from the three-speed manual transmission to the original Plymouth wheel/hubcap combo that hides the modern Goodyear tires. If you're interested in early Mopars or just American heroes, this Plymouth is an easy to run classic that will provide you smiles that go beyond its affordable price.
