Plymouth Road Runner 1970 Description
It was late 1969, and Plymouth was out to win you over. Part of that program would include seeing the #43 on one of the company’s cars again, and to that end, Plymouth had made a very rapid commitment to creating an aerodynamically functional body legal for the Grand National series to get Richard Petty back from Ford. The cars would be based on the Road Runner and all had to be constructed before January 1970 due to federal changes in headlight laws. The resultant Superbird vehicle also had to be built in enough numbers to legalize the design for racing. Under pressure, Plymouth met the minimum number. Therefore, most of the ‘birds were sales-bank models and received as standard the 440-4BBL engine. A small portion were constructed with Hemi power, and there were 308 (approximately 15 percent of the total production of 1,920 units) 4-speed 440 Six Pack Superbirds produced for 1970, this vehicle’s single model year. Featuring a pointed ‘beak’ and a tall rear spoiler, the car was instantly recognizable. The example offered here has 27,000 original miles and features its matching-numbers V-code 440 Six Pack powerplant as well as the Super Track Pak option consisting of the A833 4-speed manual transmission and 4.10:1-equipped Dana 60 differential with Sure Grip. The 440 Six Pack engine was noteworthy in both design and performance and has since become an iconic part of Chrysler’s muscle-car era. Other equipment includes power steering and power brakes, Rallye wheels with BF Goodrich Radial TA tires, chrome exhaust tips, hood pins, and Superbird-specific scoops and spoilers. Presented in Alpine White with contrasting black vinyl top, the interior features black vinyl bench seating with silver accents, Pistol Grip-handle Hurst shifter, wood-grain finish 3-spoke steering wheel with Voice of Road Runner horn cap, and AM radio. Further changes in both the NASCAR rules and Chrysler’s continued involvement meant there would never be another Superbird built; the car being made available here is a fittingly attractive tribute to that legacy.Untitled Document
