Oldsmobile 442 1968 Description
This Sweet & Spicy Saffron Yellow 442 Could Be Yours!Oldsmobile first introduced the 4-4-2 in 1964 as an option for the Cutlass. Pronounced "four-four-two," the name originally referred to a four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhaust. In 1965, Oldsmobile changed the standard transmission for the 4-4-2 to a three speed automatic, although a four speed manual transmission was still an option. Oldsmobile said the second 4 of the sequence now referred to the larger 400ci V8 engine.
In 1968, the 442 became not just a option package, but a model of its own. The base 400 cubic inch (6.6 liter) engine made 325 horsepower with the automatic transmission, and peak torque of 440 ft/lbs came at 3000-3200 rpm. Side marker lights made their first appearance in 1968, as did front outboard shoulder belts. It was the last year for wing windows on hardtops and convertibles. Rear bumpers in '68 442s had unique exhaust cutouts and special exhaust tips.
Saffron has long been the world's most costly spice by weight, as much as $5,000 per pound, making it a highly valuable commodity.
