Oldsmobile Cutlass 1968 Description
This is a 1968 Cutlass S Holiday Coupe. This car was last on the road in 1983 and has been parked in the woods for the last 32 years.
Going by the cowl tag it was built in Canada. It has a assembly date of 2-7-3 which translates to 2nd shift, th month (July) and 3rd day. "RR" indicates a red on red exterior and 970 indicates a black bucket seat interior.
The RPO codes are:
C60- Air ConditioningD55- Floor ConsoleM20- 4 Speed
C60D55M20ST 68 34287 OS344936TR 970 2-7-3 RR
Being that this car was built in Canada it came from the factory with a C-type 12 bolt Chevy rear axle. It has a casting number of 3917124N and also has a stamping on the tube of "RC" 0704 which is the correct code for a 1968 Cutlass with a 3.08 open axle ratio and was built on the 4th of July (0704) which is a date match to the assembly date of the car.
The car also has:
Tic Toc Tach Gauge PackageRear Window DefrosterPower Drum BrakesPower SteeringRear Sway Bar
As you can see in the pictures the car is in rough shape. The original motor and transmission were both swapped out along time ago. It did not have a hood on it while the car sat so the motor got water in it and the block is cracked. The motor block casting is 3834810 and the head numbers are 3795896. These numbers come back as a 1965-67 283 engine with 2 bolt mains. The motor is no good other than for some small bolt on parts.
The transmission is a cast iron unit and looks to be a Saginaw 4 Speed. All of the clutch linkage still looks to be intact. It has a Hurst shifter on it and I was able to shift it through all of the gears with no trouble. The shifter looks to be an aftermarket replacement.
The interior is missing the floor console and the seats have been swapped out for 1970 bucket seats. The black dash pad looks very good and I do not see any cracks. The gauges all look very good. The lens on the tachometer has a faded spot at the top, ut the gauge itself looks great. The rear defroster switch and map light are mounted above the radio hole.
The seats look to be from a 1970 Cutlass with headrests on the front buckets. The drivers seat is in rough shape while the passengers side and rear seat looks good.
There is body rust and dents through out the entire car. The trunk pan is shot. The passengers side front fender looks to have been replaced before and they also put a half quarter on the back rear.
The frame looks good in the front, ut the rear of the frame will need some rust repair above the rear axle and beyond.
All of the glass is intact. The vent windows crank open and closed. The door windows and rear seat windows all crack up and down. The windshield has some whiting along the edges.
This car may not worth saving, ut I did not want to be the one making that finaldecision.I am hoping that someone will be willing to take on this project and save it.A 1968 Cutlass non-442 with a factory 4 speed is pretty rare. It has some very good parts on it and it would make a great parts, ut I don't feel right about parting it out at this time.
I do have a reserve on it that I feel would be very easy to get if I was parting it out.
I listed the title as salvage because I do not have any paperwork for the car. In some states you only need a bill of sale to register a car of this age. I will provide a bill of sale with the final sale price if needed.
