Jeep CJ 1983 Description

For Sale by Owner:

1983 Jeep CJ-5, the last year the CJ-5 was manufactured. According to the sources I have found only a few thousand were manufactured in 1983, and I can tell you that you won't see that many of them. This Jeep has 77,494 original miles, and the engine was professionally rebuilt 500 miles ago. The 4 speed manual transmission and transfer case were also removed, professionally disassembled and inspected (Both were in great condition), and reassembled with new seals. Jeep runs great, I just did the first oil change since therebuild. Also, all new clutch installed. I purchased the Jeep in New Mexico approximatley 15 years ago.

I have done the following:

Engine- professionally rebuilt, and carefully broken in.

Transmission- inspected, disassembled and new seals installed

Transfer Case- inspected, disassembled and new seals installed

Clutch- all new

Radiator- re-cored and rebuilt by radiator shop

All new single-exit exhaust system with glass pack muffler, installed one year ago

Other new parts:

Ignition coil

Alternator

Water Pump

Thermostat

Weber carburetor rebuilt

Heater Core

Center Console

New Shift boot

New plastic glove box

Frame- while I had the engine out, I disassembled and stripped the front part of the frame (from firewall to front bumper) and coated with two different types of rust preventative from POR-15. That part of the frame is very clean looking and will repeal rust for decades to come.

Many miscellaneous new parts, too many to list, hoses, electrical parts, etc.

Upgrades:

New Heater Motor designed for Chevy Blazer- blows lots more heat!

Weber 32/36 carburetor, recently rebuilt. This carberator is built for power and efficiency.

Nutter Bypass wiring procedure completed

New Fiberglass hard top and doors from Rally Tops. Expensive and hard to find!

Warn Hubs on front axle

Powertrain Specifications:

Engine: 258 AMC In-line Six, freshly rebuilt, bored .30 over

Transmission: T-176 4 speed (very good transmission)

Transfer Case: Dana 300 (very tough transfer case)

Axles: 2.72 ratio with Trac-Loc in the AMC 20 rear end

I believe the entire powertrain is original.

Jeep has a clean and clear Montana title.

Negatives

One rear wheel is slightly bent, but is barely noticable only at about 25 mph or so

Tires- plenty of tread left, but they are older tires

Body- slight damage to driver's side front fender and bumper, and the presence of rust at the normal two places on CJ's, in front of the doors. Rest of body is really good, very little rust, and is very servicable. This is a Jeep, not a Rolls Royce, this type of thing is typical.

Fuel gauge and temperature gauge are new, but not functional.

Jeep has never been in an accident. (Fender damage from tow bar mishap)

Paint- about a 100 foot paint job, not done very well. Has "tiger stripes".

Emissions note- if you live somewhere where an emissions inspection is required, I cannot guarantee that this will pass it, as the emissions system has been removed and plugged (it was non-functional).

Included items: original rear body mount for spare tire, two repair manuals (Haynes and Chilton), and a repair/adjustment manual for the Weber carburetor.

My original plan was to have the body and paint done by a shop, but I recently was able to find my dream hot rod, so I need to sell this to make room. I have a lot of money and parts into this Jeep, and will not be giving it away, thus a reserve price has been set. Message me if you have any questions. The two links below will take you to youtube for an overview video and in the second one I start the Jeep up.
