Jeep CJ 1970 Description
Up for auction is a 1970 Kaiser CJ5 Jeep. This Jeep has the original Dauntless Buick 225 V6. This was originally purchased as a father/son project but we never finished it and he is off to college later this year. This Jeep is in pieces and it will be up to the buyer to haul it away as is.
The Good:
We started the engine when we first got it and it started right up. We only ran it for a few minutes but it sounded fine (no knocks, etc.). We bought new cap and plug wires that come with the Jeep.
The transmission and transfer case seem to be intact and in working order. It does need a new front seal (the rear one was changed). I have the seal but didn't install it. It can be done without tearing it apart.
The locking hubs seem to be working correctly.
The front and rear differentials seem to be working correctly although I'm sure they should be drained and cleaned.
The body tub is actually in decent shape for the year. The floor is shot but the rest of it isn't too bad. This Jeep was originally fronm the South.
The grill and hood are intact and look pretty decent.
I don't think the roll bar is original but it fits and is in good shape.
The Bad:
The frame has several welded areas. Looks like it was cut apart and re-welded at some point. It does not, however, seem to be rusted through in any area. I tried to get some picks showing the welded areas (circled in red).
The rims and tires are not original and do not really fit. This is what came with it when we bought it. They look to be from some sort of military vehicle and the centers cut out to fit. They look kind of cool but they don't really work. They are way too far in to be drivable. It works to be able to push the vehicle around though.
The master cylinder is there but not working. The brake lines all need to be replaced. I'm not sure about the brakes as we never looked at them.
The windshield comes with it but it has a crack.
The Jeep does not come with any interior (seats, etc.)
The Jeep does not come with a roof or doors.
The gas tank is missing.
The electrical wiring is missing but it looks to be a prety simple setup. There's an aftermarket ignition switch included.
Not sure if the leaf springs are any good but they are intact. It came with newer shocks that are still in the box but they seem to be leaking oil.
The radiator looks to be original but it has a few holes. We think more from getting hit by the fan than corrosion.
The odometer is faded and not legible so the mileage cannot be read.
Overall, I think this Jeep can get a second life if somebody puts some time and a few new parts in it. I really hope someone get's it back on the road or at least the trails. This is a no reserve auction so good luck and let me know if there are any questions.
On Jun-27-16 at 16:36:35 PDT, seller added the following information:The Jeep frame does have four wheels attached and can be pushed to get it onto a trailer. The body is not attached but should be able to be strapped down to the frame/trailer.
