GMC Handi-Van 1964 Description
Up for bid is my company delivery vehicle. I need to sell it and put the money back into the business. These are hard to find and it gets a ton of attention when I drive it. Always starts up and gets me to where I need to go. Cruises with traffic on the highway easily. Really nice drivercondition.I gotthe van several years ago as a project and have invested a bunch of time, money, and sweatinto it. The van wasn't restored really. I just took care of the major issues and made it look a ton better.
BODY AND INTERIORIt had some bad rust on the rockers so those were cut out and new ones welded in. Onedoor bottom was replaced too. The other doors weren't as bad so those were treated and painted.(see picture link). The whole van got a new paint job 2 years ago. The van stays outside as amobile billboard so thepaint job has weathered some.(see picture link). The bodywork is mostly straight with some wavy metal on the bottom of the rear and side doors. Its been a work van for 50 plus years so its expected to have a few bumps. The underside of the van is very clean. There was a small amountof rust in front where 2 floor panels met. My body man suggested treating it and fiberglassing over it. Thats what we did and its held up perfectly. Van has vinyl logos on it now. They will be professionally removed if sold. Entire inside including floor was painted with rustoleum. Seats are from an s10 and have nice sheepskin covers. Custom wood paneling on doors and roof looks nice. Windows need help going up and down. The regulators are worn. Van has Bluetooth audio system.
MECHANICALAt some point, a 250 I6 was swapped in. The engine runs good and has good power. All ignition parts were replaced within the last 1000 miles. Engine, trans, and diff oil were replaced last week. 3 speed on column shifts ok. Entire exhaust system frommanifolds to tailpipe was replaced 6 months ago. A new rebuilt carb, valve cover gasket, and fuel pump were installed at the time as well. Its developed a small exhaust leak at the gasket since then. Manifolds were machined beforeinstallation.
SUSPENSION AND BRAKESVan has been lowered about 4 inches. I took it to a spring shop and they re-arched all the leaf springs. The van isn't suitable for heavy loads because the suspension will bottom out. Ive hauled a motorcycle, car engine, and lots of lumber in it without any trouble but I wouldn't do it regularly. The entire brake system ispretty much new. Manual drum brakes all around. New cylinders, shoes, master cylinder, and a few lines in the past 2 years. There is a bit of play in the king pins. I found this by yanking on a wheel when van was jacked up. It drives very nice but you can hear a little clunking on rough roads.
