So this truck has been sort of our family's "Project X". It started out 26 years ago as a neglected and well used big block step side. Still wearing what was left of it's dealer installed vinyl top and green paint.
Within a couple of years it was painted Sublime with a pearl midcoat and a fresh vinyl top new wood bed and so on.
It has seen many engine and transmission combos over the years splitting its duties from commuter, to street, and lots of drag racing.
It was taken down again 10 years ago. Vinyl top removed, a hand built SRT style steel hood created. Repainted in the same color. This time however the vinyl was dismissed in favor of a textured base/clear painted roof to resemble a vinyl texture.
The current engine is a mild build cast crank 440 that was assembled several years ago. It was from an acquaintance' ram charger who has since passed, so I don't have any specifics on it, it is however very crisp and responsive. The trans is the 727 you would expect. With an 8 3/4 rear axle with highway friendly 2.76 gear ratio.
When the engine went in last summer we installed a new fuel pump, water pump, distributor, Hitachi mini starter, spark plugs, custom fit Taylor plug wires, new radiator, and rebuilt the aged Carter carburetor. The headers are Hooker Super comp with 2 1/2" dual exhaust and Flowmasters. It has a hybrid HEI system, a Ford TFI Accell E core coil, Chevy HEI module, with a Chrysler electronic distributor. Works well so far but will include Mopar Electronics to convert back if desired, original harness is still in place.
We did some geometry changes to the front suspension years ago. We spaced the upper control arms off the frame, and sectioned the spring perches to correct caster/camber issues on the lowered truck. It's been like that since the 90's with no notable wear issues.
It has slotted vented rotors on the front, and recently changed to the "green" bearings in the rear axle.
The Truck isn't perfect. It has been used outside. It has been driven in the rain. Things like lumber, tools, car parts, and hay have been hauled in the bed. It has been owned by two other people (extended family) in the last 26 years. It has had some paint touch-up over the past 10 years. But it is a rust free original J code big block truck with non original engine.
Everything works. Lights, Blinkers, Brake Lights, Heater, Wipers, Glove box Light etc. Stereo is decent, with Kenwood Excelon sub and amp, with some Rockford's in the doors, it sounds better than you would think.
I doubt that there are many of these left in this condition. But ready to move on, more projects than time.
There is probably more forgotten information than there is listed info, but you get the idea, attached at the bottom are some old "paper photo's" from the early 90's, hasn't changed much.
