Dodge Other Pickups 1978 Description
For its age, this truck is in amazing condition, drives excellent and you can drive it anywhere. The body is very straight with no rust and mostly original paint. The clear coat is oxidized in places but overall it cleans up very nice. The inside of the bed is not dented or abused (I think it had a camper on it at some point) This truck was off the road from 1993 until 2015, stored by the owners son. I bought it and got it running again replacing and or repairing as needed to make it a reliable daily driver which it is (i've driven it 5k miles). Here's a list of what i've done: New Firestone tires (7 of them, not made in China) re-chromed original wheels; new rear shocks; new balanced driveshaft (Spicer u-joints/ center support bearing); New power brake booster and master cylinder; removed both gas tanks for cleaning and replaced all fuel hoses; replaced fuel pump; cleaned radiator and replaced coolant and hoses, water pump, thermostat, all new belts; rebuilt carburetor (stock Thermoquad passes CA emissions test (if you live in CA, this is important) installed a NOS alternator, spark plug wires, plugs etc as well as repaired misc wiring faults. I removed and cleaned all the gauges (they all work including the tachometer). Upgraded the plastic dash cluster to the earlier metal one (if you know about these trucks this is a solid thing to have as the plastic ones melt over time due to ammeter heat) . Replaced the headlight switch; rebuilt the windshield wiper motor and replaced all the plastic bushings. Replaced both door weather-seals with NOS Mopar. The 440 was rebuilt prior to the owner parking it in '93 (in fact, I think he never drove it after rebuilding it because i had to change the stock intake manifold (it had a crack in the EGR passage that would leak exhaust gas into the intake causing a rough idle) I think they rebuilt the engine because of this but they put the bad intake manifold back on it after the rebuild! I removed the exhaust manifolds and installed all the correct heat shields since they were missing when i got it. Also installed a new starter and new battery cables. The 440 runs perfect and starts every time hot or cold. I also resealed the A/C compressor but i haven't leak checked the system or charged it up. All the dash vents work fine and the fan blows good. I imagine a lot of people would probably put a cummins in this truck for better mileage but that's up to you as the 440 is useable as is without having to work on it much. If you have any questions let me know. I'm not selling this truck cheap, mainly because most all the work has been done to it already and i don't need to sell it. If it sells great, I just thought someone else might want it so that's why its available. I've seen other trucks like this one sell on Ebay and this one doesn't need new tires or things fixed on it in order to drive. It does have one significant negative in that the rear plastic gas tank has a crack on the top of it. I attempted to repair it with a patch but if you fill the tank to the top it will seep gas. So my repair didn't work out that well but I wanted to let you know about this in case its a deal breaker for you. I've been running off the front tank and have used the rear for long trips but i wouldn't put more than 2/3 of gas in that rear tank. The good news is that it drinks gas so fast it will drop the level for you anyway. Sold As-Is
