Chevrolet Chevelle 1969 Description
When I bought this car in 1992, guys were already cloning Super Sports from plain Jane Chevelles. In 1969, the VIN didn’t tell you if it was an SS or not, so guys would find a 396, deck the block and re-stamp the right side deck with the appropriate number to match their Chevelle. Then it was just a matter of finding an SS hood, door panels, badging, etc. – and you had a pretty good clone. So when I saw the matching number engine, I wasn’t immediately convinced that it was “real”. But, fortunately, this car was painted in one of two colors reserved by Chevrolet as special order paint – only available on Super Sports. This was Monaco Orange (aka Hugger Orange) and had the #72 paint code on the cowl tag to verify its authenticity. (The other special order color was Daytona Yellow, by the way). Although I bought this car in Palm Beach, FL, the restoration was done here in Arizona.
Here’s a brief description of what’s up for auction. Write through eBay, or call me directly to discuss anything in depth (Chip Porter / 520-455-0454).
