Chevrolet Corvette 1961 Description
1961 Chevrolet Corvette 315hp Fuelie Pilot Car. 84. 00 original miles in beautiful Honduras Maroon with Fawn interior. The original numbers matching motor is powering this rare number 11 pilot car. I am selling this car for my friend. He likes to buy beautiful cars. but apparently does not have the stomach for selling them. I do. he is a good friend. and here we are. You will be dealing directly with him in the sale transaction. “Pilot” car. There seems to be some misunderstandings related to the term “pilot” car. I will give you my take and hopefully not add to the misunderstandings. Pilot cars are the initial serial numbers. or initial builds of any given model year vehicle. In the case of the Corvette. pilot cars are a unique rarity associated with an already unique and rare automobile. Pilot cars often included many important changes for that model year so that the engineers could test the manufacturing feasibility of the model. In the case of Corvettes. significant body changes resulted in the pilot cars being built with “hand laid” fiberglass in many of the new areas. As the 1961 Corvette had a new rear clip styling. this car has several areas of what are obviously hand laid fiberglass. New items for the model year that were not yet available in early serial number vehicles because of part shortages would likely show up on a pilot car. In the case of this car. the all new Harrison aluminum radiator was likely one such thing. Pilot cars were “walked” down the assembly line by various engineers testing their changes for that model year. The premiums associated with pilot cars are well documented on the internet. Records of restored 1961 315hp pilot cars selling for over $180. 00 are also available with a quick search. Our sale price expectations hover half this amount. This car was purchased by my friend in 1994. and was part of a collection owned by John Winn of the Four Winns boat company. The paint on the car is approximately 30 years old and is of fine driver quality. There are a few cracks and marks that I will try to show in pictures. The top end of the motor was rebuilt professionally during the last two thousand miles along with the original fuel injection unit. The pictures show exactly was the car is and I would be happy to take any other pictures you feel you need. The car runs and drives just as it was designed to do. Car is sold "as is" and "where is" with buyer to pay all shipping costs. Nice. low volume. number matching. 315hp fuel injected pilot cars are exactly the kind of rarity that blue chip collections are made from. This car is automotive history in every respect. Seriously for sale to serious buyers.
