Chevrolet Camaro 1968 Description
Around the Streetside showroom we hear a lot of conversations and those we hear about this 1968 Camaro lead us to believe that it won't last long. The paint is gorgeous it's powered by a stout 454 cubic inch big block and is the ideal cruiser to hit the shows this summer.Another black SS you say? Look closer. The paint was done in 2006 and the work was well done so it's still looking good today. Not perfect but good enough to go out on the town Friday night and show with pride anywhere. Check the crease running the length of the body it's straight and crisp one of your biggest tipoffs that someone went the extra mile to get this one right. Add in a cowl induction hood a ducktail spoiler and white SS stripes along the length of the body and you have the quintessential F-body hot rod that almost everyone can agree looks awesome. This one also offers proper SS badging 396 emblems on the front fenders (not quite the truth but we'll get to that) and lovely stainless trim particularly along the window sills. And with that stance and the fat rubber out back it's pretty hard to miss this one going down the street.Behind the wheel there are no surprises. The seat covers are new and accurately replicate the factory pieces and the handsome steering wheel is a modern leather-wrapped take on the original that looks exactly right here. The original gauges remain in the dash augmented by a column-mounted tachometer and trick white-faced dials on the center console that are reminiscent of the factory setup. Recent carpets give it a showroom fresh feel although things like the door panels might be original and starting to show their age. A modern AM/FM stereo fits in the original slot so no dashboards were harmed in the making of this Camaro and you'll note that it sports factory A/C that's fully functional. That little button on the console is the purge system for the nitrous but it's only been used for intimidation purposes; the engine has never been sprayed. Check the trunk and you'll find a correct mat that big blue bottle and even a space-saver spare just in case.If you're looking for streetable horsepower look no further than the 454 cubic inch GM crate motor under the hood. With a Holley 4-barrel MSD ignition and some long-tube headers it cranks out 425 horsepower without the nitrous. Yeah that's some pretty serious blasting powder. Installed when the car was painted a few years ago it snarls and burbles on the overrun just the way you'd expect and looks great doing it with chrome valve covers and air cleaner along with the Chevy Orange block and aluminum intake manifold. Underneath it's quite clean and was obviously built for combat with a Flowmaster exhaust system with turn-downs ahead of the rear axle and traction bars on the monoleaf springs. A built TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt out back full of 3.73 gears on a Posi make it a fantastic street car thanks to all that torque. It rides on beautiful polished Torque Thrusts wearing 215/65/15 radials up front and giant Mickey Thompsons out back.Fast and well-executed this '68 Camaro SS is a joy to drive and a legitimate threat on the street.
