Chevrolet Camaro 1969 Description
The Chevrolet Camaro served as the official Indianapolis 500 pace car four times between 1967 and 1993. Perhaps the most famous and iconic of all Indy pace cars, regardless of make or model, is the ’69 Camaro, which paced the 53rd running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1969.
In 1969 Chevrolet also stated that “...we plan to build replicas of the Pace Car to be sent to nearly all of the 6400 Chevrolet dealers across the country”. Actual production was 3,675 cars; this number includes the Camaros that were provided as courtesy and track vehicles at the race. The base drivetrain was the SS350 with a 3-speed manual transmission. Any other option could be added, including 396 engines and optional transmissions. Most cars were ordered with an optional transmission, most commonly a 4-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic (though both 3-speed manual and 2-speed automatic pace cars do exist).
The pace car replicas were built at both Norwood, OH, and Los Angeles, CA assembly plants. Analysis indicates that a little over 85% (~3200) of the pace cars were from Norwood and a little under 15% (~500) were from Los Angeles, which is comparable to the overall plant production volume ratios. All pace cars are RS/SS convertibles and will have 50-A paint and 720 interior noted on the cowl tag; they were the only Camaros built in this color combination. The Norwood cars will also have Z11 stamped on the cowl tag. The LA cars were not stamped with Z11 on the tag, but the colors codes on the tag confirm that it is a pace car since no other Camaro convertible received houndstooth interior. The pace cars were all built between 02D (4thweek of February) and 05A (1stweek of May).
Offered for sale is this rare 1969 Camaro Pace car built at the Van Nuys plant in Los Angeles, 1 of 550 pace car replicas built in the California plant.
To make this car even more rare is the fact that it is in completely un-restored condition with the exception of a re-paint in the late 80’s which was done perfectly with the stripes buried in flawlessly. This car spent the majority of it’s life in California and the southwest before being purchased by a dealer in NY. The dealer in NY displayed the car in his show room for nearly 15 years. This Camaro is completely original throughout with only 40,500 miles on it. Numbers matching drive train which includes engine transmission and rear end. It has a 350, 300HP motor with a turbo 350 transmission and non-posi rear end. The car also has the original interior in mint condition with the exception of some fading on the driver and passenger seats. This Camaro also retains all it’s original glass, convertible top, top boot, trunk mat and space saver spare tire kit. The car runs and drives perfectly with everything in working order including the cowl induction hood flap and cigarette lighter. The underside of the car is in impeccable condition with no rust and little wear. The only flaws I could find on this survivor are some very small stone chips here and there and a small dent about the size of a dime on the bottom of the passenger rocker. This Camaro was optioned with a tilt wheel and automatic with horseshoe shifter in the center console and door edge guards. The pace car replicas were delivered to the dealerships without the door decals, they were placed in the trunk and were placed on the car at thediscretionof the dealer or owner. If you look at pics of pace cars with the decal applied you will observe that they are commonly in different locations on the door and often times skewed rather thanparallelto the horizon. This Camaro does have a set of decals that will come with the car.
