Cadillac DeVille 1970 Description
This is a 1970 Cadillac Sedan DeVille with 52,000 miles. As far as I know, I am the 2nd owner. Purchased around 2010, it had 40,000 miles on it and had serious mechanical issues at the time. The engine was completely overhauled, balanced & blueprinted by Rick Phemister at Accurate Engines in Fort Worth. I've had the front end worked on (ball joints, suspension, alignment), the rear end worked on (crush sleeve etc.) @ Dallas Differential, and nearly every system has been investigated save the transmission & braking systems, which have performed as designed. (Most of the work was performed with Craig & Derrick with Mustang Service Center off of Live Oak in Dallas, and Ray @ Auto Plaza in Fort Worth. They do terrific work, are patient, and are extremely reasonable. I have over $10,000 of repair receipts regarding the mechanical restoration of this car, but I've grown tired of the hobby and don't have the facility to continue the next phase of body and interior restoration. There are still a couple of small issues that the car has, which are listed below, however this car runs like a champ. Once upon a time, the engine bay was detailed, but it is far from show room now. (I have pictures of the original condition if you'd like.) The engine block and exterior engine block parts were painted white, so I could keep an eye on anything unusual after the pricey rebuild. I also had a water temperature gauge installed because Cadillacs of this year/time period only had a speedometer, but no active water or battery gauges etc. It made me extremely nervous after the engine overhaul that the only heat sensor that was installed was an stock GM overheating light alone, and I wasn't even sure that worked at the time. The active temp gauge gives great peace of mind.Mechanical:
One leak coming from the power steering gear box.
Hazard switch needs replacing, however I've never had any problem passing inspections.
Manual parking brake release lever broken and automatic parking brake vacuum release inop. (You can still apply & release the parking brake, however there is a little trick)
AM/FM radio works, but the original speakers are toast. I attempted to have the original speakers re-coned by Freeman Tuell, but it was a fruitless endeavor, as they are not able to be salvaged. Replaced dash speakers, but they sound blown.)
Clock display inop.
The dash light dimmer probably needs to be disassembled and cleaned, as there is a small sweet spot in which the dash light do operate well.
Windshield wiper pump is most likely inop, but the windshield wipers do work and I have the original silver blades.
Body: Cracked up front passenger side quarter panel. Rear bumper & trunk damage. There is also rust damage around the rear window. I've plugged the holes with silicone to reduce the water intake, but it still needs to be addressed. The interior carpet and seats need to be replaced, i.e. reupholstered, as they are pretty much toast. The other interior parts such as the dash, door paneling, roof liner, and trim are in OK restorable condition for the most part. The rubber door seals etc, all need replacement save the rear/front window seals, which were previously replaced. The interior of the trunk is stripped bare to the metal and has one small hole where it rusted through near the tail of the car.
Electronically, all systems are working properly, except the driver side rear window, which is intermittent at times.
The condition of the air compressor/condenser is unknown, as the air conditioner system has not been addressed. The fan blows and operates, but there are a few vacuum hose issues. The heater can be made to work. Heater core has been replaced.
Special note: The gas tank has been removed, coated twice, fuel sending unit rebuilt & sealed, new A/N braided fuel lines installed, carburetor rebuilt, and all other engine exterior parts, such as the alternator, power steering pump, fuel pump, water pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap & points, & radiator have around 12,000 miles on them since the full engine rebuild. (There are a total of 3 fuel filters installed. One AN fuel filter just beyond the gas tank, one in the fuel pump, and a 3rd fuel filter at the carburetor intake linkage. There are also AN braded send and return lines to the transmission and the send return to the power steering pump. I just replaced the ignition coil, so it is new and the car has never run better! The battery is 5 or so years old but still is turning over this big 'ol 472 engine.
It's also worth mentioning that there are other cars of this year out there, however most of them do not have near the low mileage that this car does, and you do not necessary know what you might get into with something that has a nice interior and paint, but if it don't go, let me tell you, there is nothing worse than having a 5,000 pound car that you can't get to move. Like I said, this thing runs like a hoss & has a ton of potential.
Recently, I had a mobile mechanic come by to give the car a clean bill of health & a second opinion. I can e-Mail you a pdf of the evaluation.
I have a clear title and is currently insured, inspected & registered. Please e-mail me and we can get together for a test drive.
Thanks so much for looking.
