AMC Eagle SX/4 1982 Description
I have owned this car for about 8 years. It is 2-dr hatchback. White over blue. 152 cu in, select 4-wheel drive, power steering, power brakes, AM/FM CBstereo radio, A/C,front bucket reclining seats, clock, console, dual remote sport mirrors, vinyl/cloth upholstery, sport steering wheel, inside hood release, Halogen headlamps, fog lights, Stock original 5 spoke alloy rims. Great survivor, looks good the paint is thin in places and has some chips in a few spots, I have been under this car for many hours and have never found any rust, very solid. Runs and drives very well.
I was working in the oilfield and was recently laid offso I decided to startmy own business. I have to let some of my cars go to fund my startup.
Thiscar had 69k original miles on it when I bought it. The man I bought it from purchased the car from the original owner. He was not mechanical and felt the car was going to be more than he was going to be able to handle. He said the engine was making a howling noise. Turned out to be as easy as a bad water pump. I drove the car and took care of the typical issues that come from a vehicle that has been sitting and not driven for years. A few years ago at about 103k milesthetiming cam gear lost some teeth so, in the process of replacing the gear, I decided to pull the engine and do a complete overhaul.
So here are some of the things I can remember:
Water pump, belts, hoses, radiator repair, fan clutch, clutch master cylinder, brakes, bearings, shocks, tires. Timing gear has been replaced with an aluminum racing gear, it will never fail again. The block was sent to the machine shop and cleaned and bored .030 over, the crank was ground .010 under. A high performance oil pump was installed, The valves where all removed, cleaned and lapped. After all of the engine work wasdone up to the installation of the cam, I called CompCams and gave them all the information and they cut a custom cam for performance. A Brute force clutch was installed, Rebuilt rear Differential, new bearings again, front trailing arm bushings, sway bar end link bushings.
I trust this car to drive anywhere, it is hands down the best winter car I have ever driven, I have gotten as good as 34 miles per gallon but typical is about 30 mpg, the lowest I have gotten was about 27 but that was in mountain driving conditions, 4 wheel drive works very well and holds this car to the road like no other. The SX/4 was the king of rally racing in its day. It is a very fun car to drive, with a T5 five speed transmission, the handling is amazing, I have driven about 2500 miles on the engine and it has been flawless.I have dreamed of taking this car upPikes Peak or vintage rally racing.Like the Texas 1000.
